Tahiti in one minute

The gateway to French Polynesia and its real, lived-in island: a market, black sand coast, waterfalls, deep valleys and the most famous wave on Earth. Cheaper than the resort islands, and the best place to meet local life.

Go if you want

  • Culture, food and a working island, not only a postcard
  • Waterfalls, valleys and viewpoints you can reach by car
  • A base with every flight, ferry and price level

Think twice if you want

  • White sand and a perfect shallow lagoon: Moorea and Bora Bora are better
  • A quiet resort feel: Papeete has traffic and noise
  • Everything without a car: the south needs wheels

Our advice

Sleep on the west coast for the first two nights, then move to a pension on the east or south coast if you want to go deeper. Names that often come up when comparing: Le Méridien Tahiti (Punaauia) and InterContinental Tahiti Resort and Spa (Faa'a) for resorts. Check current rates and reviews before booking.

Before you go

Rent a car early

Cars sell out in July and August. The loop and the south are only practical with one. Driving is on the right and traffic jams near Papeete at rush hour.

Mind the long flight

Many flights land at night. Book your first night near the airport and keep your first full day light.

Carry some cash

Cards work in hotels and larger shops. Markets, roulottes and small pensions prefer cash in CFP francs (XPF), pegged to the euro.

Avoid rivers after rain

Valley trails turn slippery and rivers rise fast. Go with a guide in the interior.

Ask before photographing

Ask people before taking their picture, and never take stones, shells or coral from sacred sites.

Protect the reef

Use reef-safe sunscreen, wear water shoes and do not touch coral. Reef edges and sea urchins are common.

How many days do I need in Tahiti?

Three days cover Papeete, the west coast and the island loop. Add one or two days for Teahupo'o and the south.

Do I need a car?

For the loop and the south, yes. If you stay in Papeete or on the west coast for a short stopover, taxis and transfers are enough.

Is Tahiti good for beaches?

Beaches are mostly dark volcanic sand or pebbles, and the lagoon is best seen by boat. For white sand and clear shallow water, add Moorea or Bora Bora.

Is it safe to swim?

Swimming inside the lagoon is generally fine, but currents flow through the reef passes and the open ocean can be dangerous. Ask your host or a local guide.

Can I visit Teahupo'o without surfing?

Yes. Local boats take visitors out to the channel to watch the wave, and the village has guesthouses and small restaurants.

Is Tahiti worth it?

Yes, as a base and for culture, food and landscapes. Most travellers combine it with Moorea or Bora Bora.
