Bora Bora in one minute
A lagoon around the jagged peak of Mount Otemanu, about 10 km long and famously expensive. You do not need an overwater bungalow to enjoy it: the same lagoon is open to everyone on a day boat.
Go if you want
- The classic lagoon: rays, reef sharks and turquoise water
- A short, easy trip: 3 to 5 days is enough
- A honeymoon or a special occasion, with a plan to control costs
Think twice if you want
- Cheap nightlife or lots of shopping: the island is small and quiet
- Big hikes: climbing Mount Otemanu is not allowed
- Low prices everywhere: food and activities cost more than on Tahiti

When to go
May to October is dry, warm and less humid. The wet season, roughly November to April, brings heavy showers that often pass quickly, and rates can be lower. July and August are the busiest weeks: book early.

Day-by-day plans
Pick your length. Each plan keeps the big lagoon day first and leaves room to rest.
Where to stay
Three ways to sleep in Bora Bora. Many travellers mix them: one or two nights in a resort, the rest in a guesthouse.
Best valueGuesthouse (pension)
Family-run rooms or bungalows on the main island. Matira is steps from the beach; Vaitape is close to shops, food trucks and the boat quay.
Guesthouses near Matira
Good compromiseOver-lagoon bungalow
A few guesthouses have simple overwater or over-lagoon bungalows. You get the postcard view for a fraction of resort rates.

Once in a lifetimeOverwater resort
The full experience, with private lagoon access. Best for honeymoons. Garden or beach bungalows at the same resorts cost much less.
See overwater resortsThe hybrid plan we recommend
Book one or two nights in an overwater resort, then move to a guesthouse for the rest of the stay. You keep the experience and cut the bill. Names that often come up when comparing: Chez Nono and Hotel Matira (guesthouse and small hotel, Matira area); Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island and Maitai Polynesia (resorts). Check current rates and reviews before booking.

Do this firstShared lagoon excursion
The classic day: shallow-water snorkeling with rays and reef sharks, the coral garden and a sandy motu. Choose a small group. A private boat for two costs about €300–500.

FreeMatira Beach
The best public beach on the island, with a thatched pavilion, and easy to reach by bike. Go late afternoon for softer light. Snorkel gear from your guesthouse is enough for the shallows.
Stay near Matira
Ride the island loop
Start in Vaitape. Ask for a security chain, and fill up with fuel in Vaitape before you go. Stop at viewpoints and the Matira side for a swim.

4×4 tour of the interior
High-clearance 4×4 up to lookouts over the lagoon and the old guns left from the Second World War, with stories about the island. Many sites are private, so the guide handles access. Booking direct with the operator can cost less.

Guided walk on Mount Otemanu
The summit is off limits, but a guide takes you up the lower slopes for wide views. Go before the heat and bring water.

Diving with mantas and sharks
Manta rays, reef sharks and clear water make Bora Bora one of the better dive spots of the Society Islands.

Sunset cruise
When the light drops, Mount Otemanu turns gold. A cruise is the easy option. For a budget version, have a drink at the Bora Bora Yacht Club or watch from Matira Beach.
See sunset cruisesWhere to eat
Eat like the island does: food trucks and the market most days, one proper dinner as a treat.
Local favouriteRoulottes in Vaitape
Food trucks set up along the waterfront most evenings. Generous plates, cash only in practice. Roughly €10–17.

Vaitape market and bakery
Fruit, firi firi (Tahitian doughnuts) and baguettes at XPF 100–150. Buy picnic food here before a beach day.
Snack Matira
Relaxed spot at Matira with a view over the water. Good for a simple lunch or sunset after the beach.
Bloody Mary’s
A long-standing island institution. Treat it as one special meal rather than an everyday stop.
Bora Bora Yacht Club
Lagoon-side, just past Farepiti wharf on the way back to town. A good end to a lagoon day.
What to order
- Poisson cru: raw tuna with coconut milk and lime
- Poulet fafa: chicken with taro leaves
- Mahi-mahi: grilled, often with vanilla sauce
- Firi firi: sweet fried dough
What it costs
Build your own estimate. Ranges come from local guides in October 2026 and exclude flights.
Includes rooms, two local meals a day plus breakfast, and the activities you picked. Resorts are shown as a starting price.
Check live pricesBefore you go
Book flights early
Domestic fares from Tahiti rise sharply in the weeks before departure, and baggage limits are tighter than on international flights.
Save with the shoulder months
May to June and September to October are usually noticeably cheaper than July and August, with the same dry weather.
Plan your boat transfer
The airport is on a small islet. Confirm who pays for the transfer to your hotel and the last departure before booking dinner on the main island.
Carry some cash
Resorts take cards. Food trucks, markets and small shops prefer cash in CFP francs (XPF), pegged to the euro.
Ask before crossing land
Many viewpoints are on private property. Ask permission, or go with a guide who arranges access.
Protect the reef
Use reef-safe sunscreen, wear water shoes and do not touch coral. Bring water and snacks for walks.
How many days do I need in Bora Bora?
Three to five days cover a lagoon tour, the beach, the island loop and time to relax.
Do I have to stay in an overwater bungalow?
No. Guesthouses and small hotels on the main island give easy access to the same lagoon at a much lower price. Or mix: one night in a resort, the rest in a guesthouse.
How do I get from Tahiti to Bora Bora?
By a short Air Tahiti flight of about 50 minutes, then a boat transfer from the airport islet. Book early in high season.
Is Bora Bora good for families?
Yes, especially around Matira Beach, where the water is shallow and calm. Ask tour operators about age limits.
Can I get around without a car?
Yes. Bikes and scooters can be rented in Vaitape and around Matira, the island has one 32 km coastal road and taxis are available, though quotes can be high.
Is Bora Bora worth it?
Yes for the scenery and the lagoon, if you plan around the cost. For more culture and hiking at lower prices, pair it with Tahiti and Moorea.
