Peru is home to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and one of the best food scenes in the world. A little planning matters here, because altitude, train tickets and entry permits all need to fit together.
Quick facts
- Getting there: fly into Lima (LIM), then take a short domestic flight to Cusco.
- Best months: May to September is the dry season in the Andes. December to March brings heavy rain.
- Time needed: 8 to 12 days.
- Currency: Peruvian sol (PEN).
A simple first route
- Lima (2 to 3 nights): food, coastal cliffs and the old centre.
- Cusco and the Sacred Valley (3 to 4 nights): give yourself time to adjust to the altitude before long walks.
- Machu Picchu (1 to 2 nights): by train to Aguas Calientes, with the ruins visited early in the day.
Money-saving tips
- Book Machu Picchu entry and train tickets early. They sell out, especially from June to August.
- Compare train classes: the cheapest seats are still scenic.
- Set lunch menus in Cusco and Lima cost very little and are often excellent.
- Spend your first day in Cusco gently. Rest, drink water and skip heavy meals.
- Get mobile data before you land so maps and translation work at once.
Prices, schedules and entry rules change. Always confirm with airlines, hotels and official sources before booking.
