Mexico Travel Guide: Beaches, Cities and Ruins

Mexico packs Caribbean beaches, colonial towns, ancient ruins and some of the world’s best food into one easy trip. Flights are frequent and prices are friendly, so it works for a long weekend or a month.

Quick facts

  • Getting there: Mexico City and Cancun are the main gateways, with many direct flights from North America and Europe.
  • Best months: November to April for dry, sunny weather. The Caribbean coast has hurricane risk from June to October.
  • Time needed: 7 to 14 days.
  • Currency: Mexican peso (MXN).

A simple first route

  • Mexico City (3 to 4 nights): museums, markets and a day trip to the pyramids of Teotihuacan.
  • Oaxaca or Merida (2 to 3 nights): food, crafts and colourful old towns.
  • Riviera Maya or Tulum (3 to 4 nights): beaches, cenotes and Mayan ruins.

Money-saving tips

  • Long-distance buses are comfortable and cheap. Book the first-class lines.
  • Eat where locals eat: set lunches and market stalls cost a fraction of beach restaurants.
  • Beach resort areas are priciest in December and Easter week. Shoulder months are far cheaper.
  • Book popular ruins and tours ahead in high season.
  • Get mobile data before you land so maps and rides work from the airport.

Prices, schedules and entry rules change. Always confirm with airlines, hotels and official sources before booking.
